The King Eternal Reigns

Who has Control over the Earth?
By: John Wilson

I have heard many evangelicals say that Satan is in control of the events on earth as we speak. How does that make you feel when you go to sleep at night? When reading the Bible at first glance it is easy to see why many Christians come to that conclusion. For example, Satan is also called the “prince of the power of the air” in Ephesians 2:2. He is the “ruler of this world” in John 12:31 and the “god of this age” in 2 Corinthians 4:4. But there is more to the Bible than these three verses. As it turns out, Satan can not do anything outside the permission of God. Satan’s power is given to him…by the all powerful, Sovereign God who is really running the show. We see this in the book of Job where Satan is powerless to do anything to Job until God permits him to do so and Satan must stay in the parameters set by God (i.e. you can’t take his life from him). At closer look, believers are not under the power of Satan. According to Colossians 1:13, we have been delivered from the domain of darkness and transferred into the Kingdom of His beloved Son. Only unbelievers have been captured by the snare of the devil and no longer have a will that is free but rather doing the devil’s will (2 Timothy 2:26). So yes, if you are an unbeliever, it appears that Satan is in complete control of your life because you are blinded to the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But according to my Bible, if the Son has set free from the bondage of sin and power of Satan, you will be free indeed! You will be free to obey the True King of this earth…the King Eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God (1 Timothy 1:17). The Bible says that this King is the ruler of kings on earth (Revelation 1:5). John 12:31 may say that Satan is the ruler of this world but if we keep reading (in John 16:33) Jesus tells us to take heart because he says: “I have overcome the world.” Notice what the Bible does not say, it doesn’t say that Jesus “will” overcome the world,.. it says that I {Jesus} “Have” overcome the world. Before Jesus ascends into heaven after he has risen from the grave to demonstrate His power over sin and death he declares to his disciples that “all authority in heaven and ON EARTH HAS been given to me! Jesus has all authority and Jesus has been bestowed a name that is above all names so that at the name of Jesus Christ every knee will bow and tongue confess that He is LORD! (Phil 2:9-10) To quote Paul Washer: “some will bow by the grace that has been given to them and some will bow because their knees will be broken by the One who rules the nations with a rod of iron.” (Psalm 2) Our God is in the heavens and He does all that He pleases (Psalm 115:3, Psalm 135:6). What does it mean for Jesus to sit at the right hand of the Father in heaven? It means the reason He has been given all authority on heaven and on earth…He has been crowned king. At the ascension, Psalm 24 tells us that Jesus ascends to heaven and commands the gates of heaven, the ancient doors, to be lifted up for the King of Glory. My friends, not only is my King alive….He is reigning! Be encouraged saints for our King has given us the victory. In Revelation 12:11 it says: “And they {the church} have conquered him {Satan} by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death.”

  1. Thank you John for this article.I believe it goes hand in hand with the Escatology work I’ve read. I am still wrapping my brain around these truths. I have 38 years of untruth to peel away. At each new eye opening moment the Holy Spirit gives me about the truths of scripture, I stand back in awe and acknowledge that I must read the scripture for what it says and not what I want it to say. Thanks brother, your walk and your relationship to Christ encourage me greatly. (Ben Wilson)
